Behind the Scenes: Katherine Loretta McBroom

katie1

Katherine Loretta McBroom is a girl who does it all when it comes to beauty and cosmetics! A graduate of the Joe Blasco Make up Training Center East, McBroom has my dream job. She’s painted the faces of everyone from zombies, princesses, to blushing brides!

As a certifiable make up junkie, I love when I get to talk to someone ‘in the biz’. A long-time good friend of mine and multi-talented MUA, Katherine Loretta McBroom has taken a few minutes out of her busy day to chat with
me!

Here we go..

CC: When did you know you wanted to become a make-up artist?
I first considered it as a career while working as a performer at Walt Disney World. I fell in love with what was happening behind the scenes.

CC: What's your ideal gig as a make-up artist?
There is so much I'd like to explore in this industry! It's hard to choose just one ideal gig, but I'd love to be a personal makeup artist to a film actress.

CC: What are your personal favorites when it comes to cosmetics?  Do you have certain brands that you stick to?
I swear by Joe Blasco foundation and Max Factor mascara. For blushes and bronzers, I like almost anything by Nars. MAC shadows are my favorite for dramatic, high fashion looks. I like using mineral shadows by Pur Element for bridal and special occasion makeup. And my absolute favorite lip gloss is Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish by Bare Escentuals... I have every color in my kit!

CC: Tell us about one of your favorite gigs as a make-up artist.
Surprisingly enough, one of my favorite gigs was one of my first. I worked on a music video remake of Michael Jackson's Thriller as a zombie/special effects artist. The huge cast and crew created a fun work atmosphere and we all got along really well. It was really a memorable experience. I even ended up learning the Thriller dance myself!

CC: How often do you purchase new make-up?
I'm always updating my kit. I add something new at least once a week. I'm kind of a product junkie.

CC: How do you stay 'in the know' about the latest products & trends?
I subscribe to as many publications as I can (around 20 magazines). My mailman must hate me. I read everything from industry publications like Makeup Artist Magazine, beauty mags like Allure, fashion zines like W and all kinds of entertainment and bridal magazines. I even subscribe to GQ and Men's Vogue. I try to be as well rounded as I can. And of course, I frequent the beauty blogs and forums online.

I try to attend workshops, events and trade shows in all related fields as often as possible. I also write reviews for the beauty product panel in The Palm Beach Post, so I get to experience the hottest products on the market before they hit the shelves.

CC: What make-up trends and styles have you noticed for this season?
Spring brought a lot of soft, romantic looks with shimmers and sheer textures. We're on the verge of Summer 2009 and it looks like the shimmer is here to stay. Ocean inspired hues - glimmering deep blues and teals - are very popular for this summer. Bold brows are also coming back. And you can never go wrong with deep golds, coppers and bronzes for summer time.

CC: What's on your daily make-up regimen?
I love getting dolled up for events, but in the day time I usually wear a simple look. Foundation, mascara, lip gloss. Contrary to popular belief I'm not always wearing false lashes! I definitely like to look polished, but I like to focus more on making other people look (and feel) beautiful.

CC: What products do you recommend as a daily routine for women?
If nothing else, moisturizer and sun protection are a must. I'm a firm believer in preserving your skin before you decorate it.

CC: What services do you offer to the general public?
Anything and everything! I offer beauty makeup application for weddings, proms and other special occasions. My services also include makeup instruction and image consultation. In addition, I co-own Pretty Princess Productions, a makeover party service for little princesses.

CC: What services can you offer to larger companies?
Primarily I work with with fashion photographers doing print work. I also do runway makeup for live modeling events, theatrical makeup application for performances, and film and television makeup. I'm professionally certified in special effects and prosthetic application. And I write for beauty publications. I will consider any gig- I love the variety that the industry brings!

I'd like to thank Katherine Loretta once again for taking the time to stop by!  It was a pleasure having you and we hope to hear from you again!

Enjoy ladies!

xx
